Dr. S. Hassan A. Akbari is an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. He earned his medical degree and a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He also completed a residency in neurosurgery and served as chief resident at Washington University. He completed a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham. Prior to his position at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, Dr. Akbari was an attending physician at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Dr. Akbari has a clinic and research interest in a broad range of diagnoses including Chiari malformation, spasticity, hydrocephalus, brain tumors, and spinal dysraphism. He is Director of Clinical Research, the Medical Director for the Institute of Brain Protection Sciences Research Council, and the Assistant Program Director for the pediatric neurosurgery fellowship. He is Principal Investigator at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for the Park-Reeves Syringomyelia Research Consortium, the Posterior Fossa Decompression with or without Duraplasty randomized clinical trial, the Chiari Surgical Success Scale study, and the Genetics of Chiari malformation study. Dr. Akbari has conducted grant-funded research on Chiari I malformation and contributed towards education for the disease among patient communities and neurosurgical trainees.
