2021 Bobby Jones Classic Recap
It has been over a year since we were able to hold an in-person event and were so excited to kick off the year with one of our favorite gatherings, the Bobby Jones Classic at East Lake Golf Club. On March 28th, friends old and new gathered wearing masks in The Legacy ballroom of The Whitley Hotel with a welcome reception for the Classic. In a space with four times the capacity, pre-COVID-19, guests were welcomed with enough space to socially-distance throughout the evening. Cocktail hour included whiskey tasting featuring The Clover Whiskey Collection. Guests were also treated to an exclusive interview of Kim Dawson, producer of “Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius”, led by John Maginnes of Katrek & Maginnes on Tap.
With socially distanced seating, attendees enjoyed a lovely dinner as Mr. Paul Farrell, Bobby Jones CSF’s Chairman, thanked all of our sponsors and presented an embroidered pin flag to a brand new sponsor, Mr. Thomas Corr of George E. Warren LLC, for all of his generosity. Dorothy Poppe, Executive Director, presented a review of all of the pivotal research projects that Bobby Jones CSF has coming down the pipeline. Dr. Bob Jones IV gave a wonderful speech about his grandfather and a toast, featuring The Clover Whiskey, to his life and legacy.
Monday, March 29th, brought the most beautiful golf weather we have ever had in our 9 years at East Lake Golf Club. ProAm and AmAm Teams arrived according to their staggered tee times and collected their swag, enjoyed a grade A southern breakfast in the clubhouse, and took their qualifying putt in the Alexa Stirling Putting Challenge on the putting green before heading out on the green. Other contests on the course included Longest Drive on Hole #10 and the Closest to the Pin Challenge on Hole #2 using hickory shaft clubs. Following their 18 holes on East Lake, the putting finalists returned to the putting green to claim their title as winner of the Alexa Stirling Putting Challenge and subsequently, taking a chance at the $10,000 putt. Mr. Brian Boor is the 2021 Alexa Stirling Putting Challenge Champion but the $10,000 putting challenge remains impregnable. The day concluded with a virtual awards announcement and celebration of the winners on Facebook Live and on, the most listened to golf in the world, Katrek & Maginnes on Tap, live from East Lake’s Clubhouse with a post-tournament interview featuring Dr. Bob Jones IV and Chairman of the Board, Paul Farrell. Mr. Farrell announced the very exciting news that we will be adding another Bobby Jones Classic to our events calendar at Winged Foot Golf Club this Fall!
