Chiari Malformation and Basilar Invagination in Fibrous Dysplasia
2018 CSF Research Colloquium: New Chiari Malformation & Syringomyelia Studies
HYATT REGENCY - HOUSTON, TX - OCTOBER 6, 2018
Each year, CSF hosts an annual colloquium to improve the academic research space associated with the study of
Chiari malformation,
syringoymelia and related disorders. Experts are able to present their research and engage in meaningful discussions with others who look at these problems with a critical eye. All the presentations were based on recently published studies as of mid-2018.
Fourth-year medical student, Kristen Pan, discusses her work studying the potential connections between
Chiari I malformation, basilar invagination and a disorder known as "fibrous dysplasia", which is a condition related to bone growth.
Pan describes how many patients with fibrous dysplasia may also have a Chiari. She also goes into more detail about the potential biological mechanisms by which both of these disorders may occur, and what all this information might mean for doctors and nurses who treat this subset of patients-- particularly in terms of diagnosis and treatment!
