Dr. Bauer begins this talk with an overview of types of Chiari and common co-morbidities. He then explains how to interpret medical studies about Chiari malformation using evidence-based methods like the GRADE system. It outlines what makes research trustworthy—such as large sample sizes, multiple surgeons, prospective data collection, and reproducible results—and highlights the weaknesses of small case reports or retrospective studies. Bauer reviews how guidelines are created, how studies are ranked by quality, and what grades of recommendation mean. Dr. Bauer also discussed other topics and questions including: why Chiari treatment varies between surgeons, the challenges of measuring symptoms, and why high-quality, systematic research is still needed. Overall, it’s a guide for patients on how to critically evaluate Chiari research and understand current evidence.

This lecture was given entirely virtually on November 18th. (2025)
