Effect of Pain Catastrophizing on the Relationship between Pain and Disability in Chiari Type I

This lecture explores the relationship among pain, disability, pain catastrophizing, depression, and attention in people with Chiari malformation. Dr. Philip Allen emphasizes that although chronic pain may be difficult to eliminate, its impact on daily functioning can potentially be reduced. A web-based study of 372 adults with Chiari examined these factors using measures of pain, neck-related disability, and pain catastrophizing.

Discussed here is the relationship between pain and disability. Allen also discusses centrally sensitized chronic pain and the potential role of selective attention in helping patients manage pain. The findings could offer a hopeful perspective for managing the functional impact of chronic pain in Chiari malformation.
