School Success After Diagnosis: Chiari & Related Disorders
ADVOCATE LUTHERAN GENERAL HOSPITAL - PARK RIDGE, IL - NOVEMBER 23, 2019
Sometimes, chronic illness such as
Chiari malformation,
syringomyelia and related disorders may impact a patient's success at work or school. Liaisons like Ms. Deirdre Fischer are employed at medical centers across the country to try and maximize educational success. Ms. Fischer is a member of the
Child Life team at
Advocate Children's Hospital. Similar programs exist in centers around the country.
Ms. Fischer describes her usual duties (which can even include attending meetings regarding IEPs!) and how to best advocate for patients with Chiari, syringomyelia and related disorders to improve success at school, even in the face of a chronic diagnosis.
This presentation was given at the November 2019 meeting at
Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL. (2019)
