Mr. Wayne Wildrick, Financial Advisor of Edward Jones, shares strategies, tips, and answers questions about charitable giving. Whether you have a passion for a particular charity or are interested in leaving a financial legacy, it is important to have a strategy that fits YOUR financial situation and goals. This lecture was given completely virtually on July 25th as part of the Ask the Expert: Virtual Q&A Series. (2022)
A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a simple and effective way to manage your charitable giving. It allows individuals, families, and businesses to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to their favorite nonprofit organizations over time.
Think of a DAF as a charitable investment account. You contribute assets—such as cash, stocks, or other securities—and those funds can grow tax-free while you decide how and when to support the causes you care about most.
How Does a Donor-Advised Fund Work?
-
Make a Contribution
Open a DAF with a sponsoring organization such as Fidelity Charitable, DAFgiving360/Schwab Charitable, BNY Mellon Charitable Gift Fund, or a community foundation and contribute assets to it. You receive a tax deduction at the time of your donation.
-
Invest the Funds
Your contribution can be invested for potential growth, allowing you to increase your charitable impact.
-
Recommend Grants
At any time, you can recommend grants from your fund to qualified public charities. You choose the timing, the amount, and the recipients.
Benefits of a Donor-Advised Fund
-
Immediate Tax Deduction: Receive a tax benefit in the year you contribute, even if you distribute the funds later.
-
Flexibility: Support multiple nonprofits over time, on your schedule.
-
Simplicity: Consolidate your giving and reduce paperwork—your DAF provider handles grant distribution and record keeping.
-
Privacy: You can choose to give anonymously, if desired.
-
Legacy Planning: Name successors to manage your fund and continue your charitable legacy.
Why Consider a Donor-Advised Fund?
Whether you’re looking to streamline your giving, manage year-end tax planning, or involve your family in philanthropy, a donor-advised fund provides a versatile and impactful way to support the causes that matter most to you.
