8th CSF Hydrodynamics Symposium

Bobby Jones Chiari & Syringomyelia Foundation

8th CSF Hydrodynamics Symposium

About the International CSF Dynamics Symposium

This bi-annual symposium is an international multidisciplinary meeting. Researchers come together to discuss the current theories, computational modelling approaches and experimental data relating to healthy and pathological cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. Participants discuss CSF flow disruption, and how those fluid dynamics cause symptoms in patients with conditions like Chiari malformation and syringomyelia. Ultimately, the goal is to understand the underlying fluid dynamics to propose the best possible treatments for conditions like Chiari malformation, syringomyelia, hydrocephalus and other CSF disorders.

2026 Keynote Speakers

Roxana Carare, MD PhD
University of Southampton, United Kingdom

Roxana Carare qualified in Medicine in Bucharest in 1994. During her basic clinical training, she became fascinated by anatomy and completed her PhD in neuropathology in 2006, in the University of Southampton, UK. The main international recognition for Roxana Carare has come from the interdisciplinary research she leads, relevant to the causes and new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, with over 165 peer reviewed publications in the field. She led the discovery of the intramural periarterial drainage system for proteins and fluid from the brain that fails in ageing leading to Alzheimer’s disease and her group now focusses on harnessing this system for efficient therapies and early biomarkers for age related neurodegenerative diseases. Roxana is a member of the UK Medical Research Council Dementia Platform UK Vascular Experimental Medicine committee and the UK government advisory committee for the effects of pollution on the brain, has served as the only European member of the American NIH strategy committee for funding in dementia. Roxana has won prestigious awards, including a Dementia Research Leader award from Alzheimer’s Society UK. Roxana has served as Co-Chair for The International Alliance of Women Alzheimer’s Researchers in Alzheimer’s Association, she is Chair of the Vascular Professional Interest Area of Alzheimer’s Association, co-led the Scientific Committee for Vas-Cog, Secretary of the British Neuropathological Society, member of the scientific committee of the Rainwater Foundation, serves as an expert for several international research funding boards. Roxana is a Visiting Professor in the University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology Targu Mures- Romania where she has co-founded the British-Romanian Academic Institute of Neuroscience and most recently was successful in setting up the Romanian National Centre of Excellence of Neuroscience NeuRoX.

Martin Schuhmann, MD PhD
University of Tubingen, Germany

Martin U. Schuhmann, MD PhD focuses his clinical work on Pediatric Neurosurgery, Neurofibromatosis, and peripheral nerve pathologies, also in adult patients. Since 2007 he acts a Head of Pediatric Neurosurgery at University Hospital of Tübingen. In addition, he directs the Adult Hydrocephalus Program, the Peripheral Nerve Surgery Program and serves as Speaker of the Centre of Neurofibromatosis. He is a member of the German Pediatric Neurosurgery Reference Panel of the German Society of Pediatric Oncology and Co-Chair of the Neurosurgery group within the SIOPe Brain Tumor Group. The 2026 conference will be held at the Historic Observatory (Historische Sternwarte) in Göttingen, which is located at Geismar Landstraße 11, slightly south of the main Georg-August-Universität Göttinge campus, near the Botanical Garden and accessible by a short walk or bus from the city center.

By air

Göttingen has excellent train connections to most other cities in Central Europe. However there is no airport in the direct vicinity.

The airports of Hanover (HAJ) and Frankfurt (FRA) have good train connections with Göttingen. In case you prefer Frankfurt, take the long-distance trains (ICE or IC) directly from the airport and be sure to book your train ticket in advance and make a reservation (see below).*

To Göttingen

From the airport, you will most likely travel to Göttingen by train. In most cases, it is cheaper to book a train ticket in advance (so-called saving fares / Sparpreis), however, please be aware that these tickets are only valid for the exact train you are booking whereas the standard-fare tickets are valid for the whole day.

You can book tickets here: Deutsche Bahn AG - the major German railway company (there is a language switch at the top of the page)

The long-distance train station at Frankfurt Airport is Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Fernbf, Göttingen has only a single train station simply named Göttingen

Within Göttingen

The only public transport available are buses (see below) and taxis.

If you arrive at the train station, exit the station to the east (direction of decreasing platform number) to get to the buses or to the city centre. If you prefer a taxicab, exit the station to the west (increasing platform numbers). Close to that exit you'll find taxicabs waiting.

By bus

Detailed plan of the bus route network (PDF)

There are a variety of tickets to choose from: from single-ride to 4- and 8-ride tickets, to unlimited 1-day, 7-day or monthly passes. These can be purchased on every bus, at a number of shops and tobacconists, or at the GöVB Service Centre (Kundenzentrum der GöVB) at Markt 3, near the Old Town Hall.

The bus stop closest to the place of the conference is Kellnerweg.

  • Look for bus stops named "Kellnerweg," served by lines 21, 22, and 23.

Complete bus time tables: Routes 21 and 22, and Route 23

  • Take any of these lines towards the city center/outskirts (confirm direction with the driver or signs).
  • Exit at the Kellnerweg stop.
  • Walk to the Observatory - From the bus stop, walk down Geismar Landstraße (away from the main town/towards the observatory) and look for the first entrance on your left, marked by a large wall; the observatory is just inside.
Walk/cycle from the Train Station

From the station, it's a walk or short bike ride (5-10 mins) towards Geismar Landstraße, heading south from the city center.
