2018: New Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia Studies

Each year, CSF hosts an annual colloquium to improve the academic research space associated with the study of Chiari malformation, syringoymelia and related disorders. Experts are able to present their research and engage in meaningful discussions with others who look at these problems with a critical eye.

The 2018 Research Colloquium took place on October 6, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency in Houston, Texas. A group of medical trainees, neurosurgeons, scientists, biomedical engineers, psychologists and others presented and discussed recent research and discoveries related to Chiari, syringomyelia and related disorders.

All the presentations were based on recently published studies as of mid-2018. Those in attendance engaged in thought-provoking discussion. CSF was proud to host this meeting again and allow experts to share their results, clinical experiences, and theories to help shape future studies all around the world.

Some of the fascinating topics below include innovations in diagnostic methodologies (such as using real-time MRI and CSF flow analysis to assess strain-related headache), and treatment options that take co-morbidities and underlying pathology of Chiari and syringomyelia into account. A very important take-away from this colloquium was the up-to-date research on pediatric surgical outcomes. The recent publications show how most pediatric patients with Chiari malformation seem to do following a decompression.
